Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Many people come to therapy looking for relief from something specific. Anxiety, relationship struggles, feeling stuck, or unsure about direction. Those concerns matter, and I take them very seriously.

At the same time, those experiences are often connected to deeper patterns that don’t always show themselves right away. Psychodynamic (psychoanalytic) psychotherapy is a way of working that helps bring those patterns into clearer focus so that change is not only possible, but lasting.

What this means…

Psychodynamic (or psychoanalytic) psychotherapy is based on the idea that much of our emotional life happens outside of our immediate awareness.

We develop ways of relating, coping, and protecting ourselves over time. Many of these patterns begin early in life and continue into adulthood, even when they no longer serve us.

According to the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA), this kind of therapy focuses on:

  • Understanding how past experiences shape present thoughts, feelings, and relationships

  • Increasing awareness of unconscious patterns that influence behavior

  • Exploring emotions in a deeper and more meaningful way

  • Strengthening the capacity for self-reflection and emotional understanding

Rather than focusing only on symptom reduction, this work aims to help you understand yourself more fully.

The therapeutic relationship

An important part of this approach is the relationship we build in the room.

Over time, patterns that show up in other relationships may begin to appear in subtle ways within therapy as well. This is not a problem. It is actually an opportunity.

By noticing and understanding these patterns as they happen, we can begin to shift them in a more direct and meaningful way.

This approach may be a good fit if:

  • You’re interested in understanding yourself at a deeper level

  • You’ve tried more solution-focused approaches and still feel stuck

  • You find yourself repeating patterns you don’t fully understand

  • You’re open to a process that unfolds over time rather than offering quick fixes

If you’re not sure, that’s okay. We can talk through what you’re looking for and decide together whether this approach makes sense for you.

If this resonates with what you are looking for, I would love to hear from you
